About Dr. William Behrens
Every patient arrives with different goals, different concerns, and a different story. My responsibility is to understand those factors before recommending treatment.
I specialize in hip and knee reconstruction, including primary joint replacement and complex revision surgery. Whether someone is considering a first replacement or looking for answers after a previous operation, my goal is the same: understand the problem, explain it clearly, and develop a treatment plan that fits the individual.

One of the most important decisions I make is deciding when surgery is not the best answer.
Joint replacement can dramatically improve quality of life for the right patient, but it is still a major operation. My responsibility is to understand why someone is hurting, determine whether surgery is likely to improve the problem, and explain every reasonable option along the way.
When surgery is appropriate, careful planning begins long before the first incision. Every implant choice, correction, and technical decision should have a purpose. Patients deserve to understand not only what I recommend, but why I recommend it.

Why Engineering Matters
Before medical school, I studied biomedical engineering at Saint Louis University. That education gave me an early understanding of biomechanics, materials science, and analytical problem solving that continues to influence how I evaluate joint reconstruction.
Every hip and knee replacement requires balancing anatomy, implant design, alignment, soft tissues, and long term function. Approaching those decisions with an engineering mindset remains a fundamental part of how I plan reconstruction.
Areas of Focus
Modern reconstruction focused on restoring mobility, independence, and quality of life.

Learn MoreMy Approach
Every consultation begins with understanding your symptoms, concerns, and goals.
A careful history, examination, and review of imaging help identify the true source of the problem.
You should understand your diagnosis and every reasonable treatment option before making a decision.
When surgery is appropriate, each part of the operation should be planned with a clear purpose.
Outside the Operating Room
When I am not in the hospital or clinic, I value time at home with my wife and children. Family provides perspective, keeps life busy, and reinforces why helping people return to the lives they enjoy matters so much.
I also enjoy building things outside of medicine, learning new skills, and continually improving the systems that support my practice. Curiosity has remained one of the most useful qualities throughout my career because it encourages continued growth and better care for patients.

Begin With Understanding
A thoughtful evaluation can help clarify the problem, the available options, and whether surgery is likely to provide meaningful benefit.

Whether you are considering your first joint replacement or seeking an opinion for a complex revision, every treatment plan begins with understanding your symptoms, reviewing your imaging, and discussing the options that best fit your goals.
