Knee arthritis often develops slowly. Pain worsens, stiffness increases, and activities that once felt routine become difficult.

The goal of knee replacement is not simply to improve an X-ray. It is to reduce pain, restore function, and help you return to the activities that matter most.

What Is Knee Replacement?

The knee includes the femur, tibia, and patella. During knee replacement, damaged cartilage and a small amount of underlying bone are removed and replaced with metal and durable plastic components.

The implants recreate smooth joint surfaces while the surgeon restores stability, motion, and appropriate alignment.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The decision is based on symptoms and quality of life - not simply age or X-ray appearance.

What Happens During Surgery?

The surgeon removes damaged surfaces, prepares the femur and tibia, balances the ligaments, positions the implants, places the plastic spacer, and checks alignment, motion, and stability.

The procedure often takes one to two hours, depending on anatomy and complexity.

Every knee replacement is individualized. No two knees are exactly alike, and successful surgery involves much more than simply placing implants.

My goal is to restore a stable, well-balanced knee, correct alignment when appropriate, preserve healthy bone, use implants with a strong long-term track record, and rely on careful planning and meticulous technique.

Computer Navigation and Robotic Surgery

You may have seen advertisements for robotic-assisted knee replacement. These systems use computers or robotic arms to assist with measurements and implant positioning.

Current research suggests that these technologies may improve the precision of certain measurements. However, studies have not consistently shown better pain relief, function, patient satisfaction, or implant longevity compared with a well-performed conventional knee replacement.

For that reason, I focus on evidence-based technique, careful soft-tissue balancing, and precise implant positioning rather than relying on robotic technology.

Typical Recovery

By six weeks, walking and daily activities are usually much easier. Improvement continues for many months, and strength, endurance, and comfort may continue changing for up to a year.

Returning to Activities

Most patients return to walking, golf, cycling, swimming, gardening, travel, and low-impact exercise. Running and repeated jumping are generally discouraged because they may increase implant wear.

Will my knee feel completely normal?

A knee replacement often feels different from the knee you were born with. The goal is reliable pain relief, stability, and function.

How long will it last?

Modern implants are designed to last many years, and many patients enjoy decades of successful function.

Will I be able to kneel?

Many patients can kneel, although it may remain uncomfortable or feel different.

When can I drive?

Once you are off narcotic pain medication and have enough strength and reaction time to control the vehicle safely.
